Litter Letters in Des Moines, Iowa!
The 6th Avenue Corridor, Inc. is an ambitious nonprofit organization whose mission is to coordinate the commercial revitalization of 6th Avenue through one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods.
Partnering with the local neighborhood association, Keep Iowa Beautiful, Children & Family Urban Movement (CFUM), Moulton Elementary School, and many other community partners, Laura Peters, Executive Director of 6th Avenue Corridor created Iowa's version of The Litter Letter Project. Created by artist Steve Murga, the word THINK was filled by Moulton Elementary School students on Earth Day, with litter the students gathered in the area around their school. THINK is currently on display on 6th & Forest. A neighborhood cleanup and picnic was organized and many members of the community filled the word HOPE after collecting 95 bags of litter from the surrounding area. An educational consultant from Keep Iowa Beautiful worked with local youth from CFUM, who chose "HOPE" as their word. HOPE is currently on display in the butterfly garden at 9th & College, Des Moines. To prepare for Jazz in July, the 6AC worked with volunteers from the Holiday Inn Mercy Campus and youth from the Evelyn K. Davis to clean-up the neighborhood and fill their third and final word - CARE. Thanks to the Holiday Inn, Des Moines for sponsoring CARE. For more information http://www.6thavedsm.org |
