Workshop / Bowling Green High School, Franklinton, Louisiana
SPRING 2013. Prior to creating the first official 6ft tall Litter Letters in Louisiana a workshop was held with the local school to prototype the idea. Ellen Burford's 9th/11th grade "journey to careers" class decided to create a statement on the school grounds for Earth Day. Following a class vote they chose to spell out the words GO GREEN as a combination of being environmentally friendly and the name of their school. Each student was required to bring in litter material that could be recycled : plastic, paper and aluminium. We began by reshaping pre-made letters, turning a letter C into a letter G and then also constructed letters O and N from scratch using a cardboard template, chickenwire and wire cutters. We then filled them as a group and displayed them on the school fence. For many this was the first time creating this way. This task is not as easy as it looks! A job well done and a statement for the whole school to see. Thank you, students and staff at Bowling Green School - you proved this project could involve community and it could be fun!
